Meet Monica Berg

Monica Berg, RN, has lived in the area her whole life and has been working as a hospice nurse for more than a decade. As hospice regional clinical manager at Ethos, she leads the Bismarck team with experience and heart.

When a loved one is nearing the end of life, families often encounter a flood of questions, emotions, and uncertainty. In those moments, compassionate guidance and skilled support can make all the difference. Ethos Home Health Care and Hospice now brings its personalized hospice services to Bismarck, offering care centered on comfort, dignity, and connection.

“The most useful intervention that can be offered to a patient or a family to help them live well while receiving end-of-life care is to simply bear witness to their experience,” she says. “The hospice team embarks on a journey of presence that recognizes the individuality of each person and supports that uniqueness.”

What personalized hospice looks like at Ethos

At Ethos, hospice begins with an in-home visit from a registered nurse and a social worker. During this time, the team learns about the patient’s background, daily routines, favorite activities, and spiritual or emotional needs to help shape a care plan tailored to their life and values. As Monica explains, “The Ethos team’s foremost concern is comfort and emotional support for the individual and their family through the end-of-life journey.”

Supporting the whole person

Beyond pain relief and symptom management, Ethos Hospice supports the whole person—and their loved ones. Services, which can vary by location, may include spiritual care, legacy recordings, volunteer companionship, and more.

“We want to know the person we are serving and to have real conversations around what makes life special to them,” Monica says. “Yes, people are moving into the end of their life, but this is also the time when who they are as people can shine, and they may still live as fully as possible.”

Walking alongside Bismarck families

The team also helps honor military service, coordinate final wishes, and support families through grief for up to 13 months after a loved one passes. For Monica, serving this region is more than a job—it’s a shared connection.

“Each time I have had the opportunity to meet with family to discuss hospice, I can find some connection of common ground,” she says. “I realize that I know most of them or have taken care of someone else important to them… There is a trust that is implied when you find that you know each other or have common friends.”

Her advice to Bismarck families?

“Starting hospice sooner can improve quality of life for patients and their families,” Monica says. “It allows family to be family instead of primary caregivers.”
